How it all began
A half century ago, Nicholas Conlan, a local mechanic
began trading in a company known as the Central Garage in Rathangan, County
Kildare and through hard work went on to establish a thriving motor business,
which was to diversify into car, tractor, machinery sales, petrol pumps,
repairs and servicing.
Up to then, Nicholas had worked locally as a mechanic in Pitt's Garage, where he stayed for some 22 years. He married Brid Teehan, a native of Kerry and the couple had seven children: Brendan, Terry, Raymond, Marion, Richie, Mairead and Freddie. With limited resources, Nicholas managed to purchase the garage in Rathangan and with the help of his family built a successful family business, during an unstable economic period for Ireland with recession, high unemployment and limited job opportunities. The family were brought up in the house adjacent to the garage premises on the Kildare Road.
Following the success of the Rathangan garage, a garage residence
in Rhode, County Offaly was then purchased.
In May 1977, the family made another business investment, purchasing the
Burrows licensed premises, one of the most popular pubs in the area. In 1980, a five-acre site, was purchased, which
has become the premises for Conlans Peugeot today. The expansion continued with
the purchase of Conway's Garage, a building opposite the Central Garage, which
was converted into a filling station and a tyre centre.
Nicholas Conlans’ children were taught by their father to be honest with people and this principle has underpinned their success up until today. Sadly, Nicholas, passed away in June 1986 and his wife Brid had the foresight and dedication to create a career path for each member of the family, encouraging each of them to enter the growing business. Each family member had their own particular strengths which helped to build the business, underpinned by hard work, honesty and dedication. Brid was often found inviting customers in for numerous cups of tea or her home baking to her house beside the garage. Her links with the county of Kerry continued as Brid Conlan, continued to be an avid fan of the Kerry football team and She was so proud when her son Raymond played with Kildare from minors up to seniors level, even gaining a Leinster Under 21 Medal.
The Conlan success is underpinned by the model that customers are at the heart of everything they do, and Raymond would often travel the length and breadth of the country to customers - no journey was ever too long for Raymond! Raymond was so dedicated to his role, he often worked seven days a week in order to continue to build the business, always taking the time to listen and talk with his customers.
